Custom Language Set Documentation

Courtesy of Smackdown5:

I have have written this guide to help you understand the customize language set feature of Runboard. To be honest most of it may be obvious. Please note: thor has added some to the list since I originally wrote this.

Secondly I have used this guide to show you how to be creative with your Runboard forum with examples of what can be achieved. By all means use the examples which I created.

Please try to host the images yourself rather than hotlinking to any used in my examples. See this topic for some image hosts.

Many of my examples can be viewed on my test board. http://com3.runboard.com/bkarlstestboard

Notes:
My use of Terminology
Default refers to the Default English (US).
String = What is in the box for the Text ID's.

A percentage sign followed by a number (ie %1 is the placeholder for where other fields or numbers will be inserted.
The Minimum no. of characters for each text string is 1 and the Maximum is 200. Each Russian and Japanese Unicode character counts as 2.

Some of the examples involve tricking the html by opening and closing tags allowing further customization than Thor ever thought possible.

Text ID

Name
- This is the name which you give your language set. This text is unimportant and is NOT used anywhere on your board. A descriptive title however would be appropriate Ie if its a French Language set then call it "French Set By X"

forum_list_newtext
This is what appears in the left column of the forum list when a new topic/reply has been posted. The default is 'New', but you can have alternative text or change it to an image by using image html tag.

Example
<img src="http://img.akheva.com/img/shadowofevil_new_v7.gif" alt="New" />

*NB* Caution using images. They need to be fast loading, so small in size and not too big so as not to distort the tables.

forum_list_head_forum
This is the header for the forum list column on the forum list page. The default is 'Forum'. You can change the text or even use an image instead.

forum_list_head_topics
This is the header for the column with the number of topics of the forum on the forum list page. The default is 'Topics'. You can change the text or even use an image instead.

forum_list_head_posts
This is the header for the column with the number of posts of the forum on the forum list page. The default is 'Posts'. You can change the text or even use an image instead.

forum_list_head_lastpost
This is the header for the column with the details of the last post in a forum on the forum list page. The default is 'Last Post'. You can change the text or even use an image instead.

forum_list_lastpost_fmt
This is the format of the text in the Last post column on the forum list page.
The default is 'By %1 on %2'

%1 = The person who posted the last topic
%2 = The date/time it was posted in
format '2/3/2004, 10:10 pm'

For this string I prefer to use a shorter format which is good for boards where users have very long names.

Example
%1 (%2)
which would be
Smackdown5 (2/3/2004, 10:10 pm)

forum_list_administrators
This appears below the list of forums on the forum list page detailing the names of the administrators on your board.

The default is 'Moderators:' but some may prefer an abbreviated version ie Mods or something else.

whosonline
This is the text string which appears just above the list of forums on the forum list page for who's online and the time frame.
The default is 'Who is online, last %1 minutes:'

%1 = This is the number of minutes which the who's online feature counts from. This figure is changed via board's control panel > Set Misc Options > Minutes for Who's online feature: > Set the no. of minutes between 5mins and 60mins.

My preferred format for this string is

Example
<strong>Who Is Online</strong>, Last %1 minutes:

control_panel
This is the string used to form a hyperlink to a members control panel. It is shown only when a person is logged in.
You can change this text to whatever you want. The default is 'Control Panel'.

Personally I use this string to add in a logout hyperlink as well, rather than having to go into the control panel or bottom of the board to logout.

Example
Control panel</a> | <a href="http://www.runboard.com/logout">Logout

This would appear like this.
runboard.com | Control panel | Logout | Mark ALL forums as read | Add board to favorites | Donate | Inbox

inbox
This is the string visible only for a logged in user which when clicked takes the member to their Runboard inbox. The default is 'Inbox'. When a user receives a PM it will appear on the page as 'Inbox (1)' in bold. Using an image for this field may not be wise for instances when the number would show up next to the image.

donate
This is the string which is when clicked directs the user to Runboard Contribution page. The default is 'Donate'. Users donate to Runboard not to you!

I therefore for this string use
Example
Donate To Runboard

msgform_insert_link
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to insert a link on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is 'Insert link'.

I have successfully been able to put on an image on the button instead of text. It is NOT possible to add an image on a button with the normal img tag.

Example
" style="width: 30px; height: 25px; background-image: url('http://mercury.walagata.com/w/karlbenson/http.gif')

You need to set the width and height otherwise the button without any text will be very tiny. You will need to design your own image to go on the button and then host it and then change the link in the above example.

msgform_insert_image
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to insert an image on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is 'Insert image'.

Again using the method above you can instead use an image rather than text.

msgform_start_quote
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to insert the code in BB Code to start a quote on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is 'Start quote'.

Again using the method above you can instead use an image rather than text.

Also for the buttons where there are opening and closing buttons there is a way to have only a button which adds the start quote and close quote at the same time.

Example
For the string 'msgform_start_quote' enter
Quote" onclick="startquote(this.form);endquote(this.form);

and for the string 'msgform_end_quote' enter
" style="display: none;

Of course it is possible to mix the two and have an image for a single quote button.

msgform_end_quote
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to insert the code in BB Code to end a quote on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is 'End quote'.

msgform_start_bold
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to insert the code in BB Code to start to make the writing Bold on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is 'B'.

Again using similar example to the quote it is possible to have a single button for Bold or use an image.

Example
Using this code will create a single Bold button only with text on the button is Bold.

Enter for the string 'msgform_start_bold'
B" onclick="startbold(this.form);endbold(this.form);" style="width: 30px; height: 25px; font-weight: bold;

Enter for the string 'msgform_end_bold'
" style="width: 0px; height: 0px;

msgform_end_bold
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to insert the code in BB Code to stop further writing in Bold on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is '/B'.

msgform_start_italic
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to insert the code in BB Code to start to make the writing Italic on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is 'I'.

Using similar code to bold (However note the change for the part style) it is possible to again have a single button for italic and/or image on the button or Italic text.

Example 1
Just Italic on the button
I" style="font-style: italic;

Example 2
Italic on the button and single button to open/close italic.
Enter for 'msgform_start_italic'
I" onclick="startitalic(this.form);enditalic(this.form);" style="width: 30px; height: 25px; font-style: italic;

Enter for 'msgform_end_italic'
" style="display: none;

msgform_end_italic
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to insert the code in BB Code to stop writing in Italic on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is '/I'.

msgform_start_underline
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to insert the code in BB Code to start to underline the writing on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is 'U'.

Again it is possible to add an image to the button, change the text on the button to underlined and/or create a single button to start/stop underlining.

Example 1
Just to have text underlined
U" style="text-decoration: underline;

Example 2
To have a single underline button to open/stop underlining and having text on button underlined.
Enter for string 'msgform_start_underline'
U" onclick="startunderline(this.form);endunderline(this.form);" style="width: 30px; height: 25px; text-decoration: underline;

Enter for string 'msgform_end_underline'
" style="display: none;

msgform_end_underline
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to insert the code in BB Code to stop underlining the writing on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is '/U'.

msgform_start_center
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to insert the code in BB Code to start to center the text in the post on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is 'Center'.

As with the other buttons it is possible to change the button to either a single button and/or with an image.

Example 1
Just single button.
Center" onclick="startcenter(this.form);endcenter(this.form);" style="width: 30px; height: 25px;

Example 2
Single button with image.
Enter for 'msgform_start_center'
" onclick="startcenter(this.form);endcenter(this.form);" style="width: 30px; height: 25px; background-image: url('http://mercury.walagata.com/w/karlbenson/centre.gif')

Enter for 'msgform_end_center'
" style="display: none;

msgform_end_center
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to insert the code in BB Code to stop the text being centered on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is '/Center'.

msgform_start_code
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to insert the code in BB Code to start to type code on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is 'Code'.

Again it is possible to make changes to the button using similar examples to those for the other buttons which I have detailed above. I won't go through the examples again and again.

msgform_end_code
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to close the code tag in BB Code on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is '/Code'

msgform_start_scroll
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to start the text scrolling by inserting the start scroll tag in BB Code. The default is 'Scroll'.

I have not yet discovered a way to make the text scroll on the button. However as a temporary measure it would be possible to create an animated image with text scrolling and place that on the button.

msgform_end_scroll
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to start the text scrolling by inserting the start scroll tag in BB Code on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is '/Scroll'.

msgform_color
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to have text in a different colour on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is 'COLOR'.

Example
Having the text on the button in colour
ABC" style="width: 30px; height: 25px; color: #ff0000;

Changing the #ff0000 will change the color of the text.

msgform_start_big
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to start to make the text bigger on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is 'BIG'.

Using similar examples as used for the above buttons you can change this button. I have increased the font size of the text and made it a single button rather than opening and close Big tag buttons.

Example
Enter for 'msgform_start_big'
BIG" onclick="startbig(this.form);endbig(this.form);" style="width: 36px; height: 30px; font-size:13px;

Enter for 'msgform_end_big'
" style="display: none;

msgform_end_big
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to close the 'Big' Tag and stop further text being bigger on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is '/BIG'.

msgform_start_small
This is the string for the text to appear on the button to start to make the text smaller on the create a topic / add a reply page. The default is 'small'.

Using similar examples to those used for the Big tag I have made the text on the button smaller and made it into a single button to open and close the tag.

Example
Enter for 'msgform_start_small'
small" onclick="startsmall(this.form);endsmall(this.form);" style="width: 36px; height: 30px; font-size:9px;

Enter for 'msgform_end_small'
" style="display: none;

%1 = This is replaced by the string from Text ID 'misc_regacc_global'
%3 = This is replaced by the string from Text ID 'misc_regacc_learn'
%4 = This is replaced by the string from Text ID 'misc_regacc_locally'

%6 = This is replaced by the string from Text ID 'misc_regacc_globally'
%7 = This is replaced by the string from Text ID 'misc_regacc_lostpassword' with the link for global users wanting to recover lost passwords.

Months ago I discovered the ability to put Runboard login boxes from the homepage in the board header. However the main problem was that after you logged in the boxes were still there. I have now devised a way to put the login boxes using custom language set in a way which they will disappear when the user is logged in. Due to the 200 character limit I have had to spread the code over several text IDs and have not been able to include the Text Id 'misc_regacc_lostpassword' in either example.

Example 1
This is the example for boards which don't have any local users. (Boards created since Thor disabled their creation)

Enter for the string 'misc_regacc'
%1 %3 <b>Login: </b><input type=text name=login value="" size="10">
<input type=password name=password value="" size="10"><input type="submit" value="Go">

Enter for the string 'misc_regacc_global'
<b>Signup</b></td></a><form method="post" action="/login"><td align="right"><span class="miscoptbar" >

Enter for the string 'misc_regacc_learn'
<input type="hidden" name="submit" value="yes"><input type="hidden" name="warpmebackto" value="bkarlstestboard">

NOTE replace bkarlstestboard with the board name in your board's url (don't forget the b part). This will ensure after login the user is directed back to your forum and not Runboard.com or their control panel.

misc_regacc_global
This is %1 in the string for Text Id 'misc_regacc' referring to a global type of account. The default is 'global'.

misc_regacc_learn
This is %3 in the string for Text Id 'misc_regacc' which is a link to learn about registering. The default is 'learn about it'.

misc_regacc_globally
This is %6 in the string for Text Id 'misc_regacc' referring to the logging into a local account. The default is 'globally'.

misc_regacc_lostpassword
This is the string for %7 of the Text Id 'misc_regacc' referring to recovering lost passwords. The default is 'lost password?'.

misc_sticky_topic
This is the string which appears next to topics which have been made sticky. The default is 'Sticky topic'.

You can replace this if you wish like I have done with an image.

Example
<img src="http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/1497/pinred0jy.gif" alt="Sticky topic" />

This image is a pushpin. Image

misc_closed_topic
This is the string which appears next to topics which have been closed. The default is 'Topic closed'.

Again it is possible to use an image like

Example
<img src="http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/6360/lock5es.gif" alt="Topic closed" />

This is image is a lock. Image

misc_sticky
This is the string for when a topic is sticky it shows in the Board > Forum > Topic breakdown in the top left of a post page. The default is 'Sticky'.

Again you could use an image such as used for Text Id 'misc_sticky_topic'.

misc_closed
This is the string for when a topic is closed it shows in the Board > Forum > Topic breakdown in the top left of a post page. The default is 'Closed'.

Again you could use an image such as used for Text Id 'misc_closed_topic'.

*NOTE*
There are newer strings which Thor has not yet got around to adding to the custom language set. When he does so you may wish to change those also (especially if your language set is non-english)
